Sunday Bible Study
Luther’s Large Catechism
Immanuel Lutheran Church
Pastor Drew Nelson
Description: This year we will be studying Luther’s Large Catechism together before our Sunday morning worship at 9am. Luther says in the preface to the Small Catechism about our education on the matters of faith that, “after you have taught the people a short catechism like this one, then take up a longer catechism and impart them a richer and fuller understanding.” This is of course after he says we should memorize the shorter version and be well versed in its explanations. “It is not trivial that we constantly treat the catechism and exhort and implore others to do the same, for we see that unfortunately many preachers and pastors are very negligent in doing so and thus despise both their office and this teaching… It contains what every Christian should know…” (Martin Luther’s Preface to the Large Catechism). This teaching was designed and undertaken for the instruction of children and the uneducated, yet all ages will be thoroughly engaged regardless of background or current beliefs and understanding. Classes rely on reading throughout the week and are discussion oriented. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
